Pigs covered with excrement and asbestos sheds: it's time to close this farm forever

In a breeding farm in Pavia, the pigs are still in unacceptable conditions, which is why Being Animals requests closure

The conditions in which the pigs of a farm in Santa Cristina and Bissone, in the province of Pavia find themselves, are still serious, the structure is in critical conditions for the animals, for the environment and also a source of discomfort for the inhabitants of the area, for this Being Animals is mobilized to ask for the definitive closure of the establishment.

Last year, Being Animals, which has been fighting for the rights of animals and their well-being for years, told what was happening in a pig farm in Santa Cristina and Bissone, in the province of Pavia.

“Here we found rotting corpses abandoned in a bin without any cover. We went back again this year and we realized that the situation is irrecoverable: the structure must close ”, writes the organization.

In August 2020 there was, in fact, a report from a citizen who complained of the presence of strong smells coming from a pig farm in the province of Pavia.

“Once on site, our investigators documented the presence of dozens of abandoned pig corpses, in the open air in a box outside the farm. The carcasses were in an advanced state of decomposition and protruded from the edge of the caisson, releasing the body fluids on the surrounding ground, ”they say again.

Following the report, the ATS of Pavia had imposed a sanction because the cold room necessary to keep the dead animals in the farm was not functioning. At the end of June, new reports arrived due to a very strong smell given off by the farm itself.

Here's what Being Animals tells us:

“The nauseating smell is probably caused by the accumulation of manure inside the same enclosures in which the animals live, forced, as our images show, to live in conditions of extreme neglect. The floor of these enclosures is not cracked, so it is not possible to drain the faeces and urine of the animals, which should therefore be cleaned daily and never accumulated, especially with high summer temperatures. The result is a clear lowering of the quality of life for all the inhabitants of Santa Cristina and Bissone, not only for the houses adjacent to the farm, as the wind pushes the smells up to the main town ". The organization reported to the competent authority that it carried out a check, noting the same hygiene problems that had been reported: pigs covered with excrement and floors full of feces and urine.

“In addition to obvious health problems, we found that the roof of the farm is most likely made up entirely of asbestos, with broken and crumbled parts, which puts the health of workers and animals at risk. This is why we presented a complaint to the ATS to have the condition of the roofs checked and if it was asbestos proceed with the removal. As if that weren't enough, the same people who contacted us found a pipe in a nearby field, where sewage is allegedly illegally dumped. For this alleged offense we are working with the Environmental Police of Pavia ”, explains again Being Animals.

What does being an animal ask for?

This situation has been going on for many years, as some of the inhabitants of the country told us.

“On the part of the Municipality in the person of the Mayor we have always been assured that the bodies in charge of control would be activated, but in fact the situation has always remained unchanged. Perhaps because the checks were made by making an appointment, perhaps because you prefer to pay a fine rather than save the animals a life of suffering ".

The problems in this farm are too many: in addition to the critical health and environmental issues, there are those relating to the structure itself, which was opened in 1960. "The only solution for the good of the inhabitants, the environment and the animals it is its closure. For this reason, in addition to the necessary reports and requests to the health authorities, we are coordinating a series of actions against the Municipality and the Mayor and to highlight this serious situation of neglect in the local media ”, the organization says.
