Photovoltaic: inauguration of the largest concentration plant in the world that produces energy even at night

The system is based on the principle of concentrated solar energy: in the center of an imaginary circle with an area of 185 hectares there is a sort of tower, while around it, according to a precise arrangement, something like 2.650 heliostats are arranged. The latter are nothing more than very particular mirrors, each of which, thanks to an automated mechanism, is able to follow the orbit of the sun from sunrise to sunset.

Despite the Spain suffered more than other European countries there world economic crisis, international investments in renewable energy they continue. The last one, already entered the top 5 of projects of this kind in terms of economic significance, is the result ofagreement between two big names in the sector:arab masdar - the same one that built an entire city that bears his name - and the spagnola SENER, one of the largest construction companies of the Iberian Peninsula. The figures involved are of order millions of euros (291.132.258 to be precise), and just take a look at the images to understand that this is not the usual solar power. It will in fact be able to produce energy for well 25.000 homes. Even at night.

The system is based on the principle of concentrated solar energy: in the center of an imaginary circle with an area of 185 hectares there is a sort of tower, while around, according to a precise predisposition, something like 2.650 eliostati. The latter are nothing more than very particular mirrors, each of which, thanks to an automated mechanism, is able to follow the orbit of the Sun from sunrise to sunset.

In this way, solar radiation is "concentrated", hence the name of the system, towards the same point, so as to maximize the heat produced. In the case of the Gemasolar power plant - which is located in Seville (Andalusia) - the heliostats bring the top of the tower to one temperature di 900 ° C, by heating various tanks of molten salts through pipes and the like, capable of storing heat for hours and hours.

The innovative aspect of the system is precisely this: the tanks allow to release the heat accumulated during the day for the successive 15 hours. In this way the energy produced is guaranteed for 270 days a year, that is, three times the minimum time of a solar system traditional.

With all due respect to those who argue that solar is not credible because it does not work at night, Gemasolar will produce the beauty of 110 GWh / year. Archimedes Pythagorean would be proud of us.
