On June 13, the 54-year-old photographer, during a cruise organized by Go Whale Watching in Sydney Harbor, took a photo that is going around the world and fascinating the biologists themselves because, in fact, it is incredibly rare and there are not many photos that show the penis of a humpback whale, especially on the surface, during a jump.
Already in 2015 the video of the Pacific Whale Foundation had caused a sensation, whose researchers had managed, with a GoPro underwater camera, to capture the humpback whale swimming with his penis clearly visible (1:10 minute).
A humpback whale penis, they explain, can be up to 10 feet long and is normally hidden within the animal's genital crevice. Seeing the penis extrude from this crevice is a rare sight, even more so during a jump out of the water.
"I have photographed thousands of whales but I have never caught anything like this before, so it was certainly thrilling." John Goodrdge said elatedly. .
Goodradge had already jumped to the headlines by managing to immortalize in 2018 the moment in which a huge 20-ton humpback whale jumped out of the water almost touching a cruise boat. under the amazement of tourists:
And indeed the east coast of Australia comes alive every year between April and November with thousands of specimens of humpback whales that have arrived there after having traveled over 10.000 km from Antarctica to mate and give birth to their cubs.
