Philodendron: how to care for it in winter

The philodendron requires special care and attention during the winter months. These houseplants, during this period, are subjected to unfavorable growing conditions due to the decreased light levels, dry air, shorter days e rigid temperature. Adapting care procedures to accommodate seasonal changes is key to helping these plants survive.

The philodendron is a houseplant with beautiful glossy and heart-shaped leaves; it is a very resistant species, which also loves a little drought, therefore, it is good to proceed with watering not too frequent and close in winter. If a leaf begins to wilt or change in appearance, just cut and discard it, you will see others grow in no time.

The philodendron loves light, but it is good to avoid direct sunlight which could burn the leaves. The advice is to place the vase in a bright and warm room as, especially in winter, it suffers from low temperatures.

Propagation

La propagation by cuttings of the philodendron should be carried out during the summer months. Avoid breeding in the winter months; in summer, however, if you wish to propagate the plant, be sure to take cuttings about 7-10 cm long, with a minimum of 3 leaves attached to the stem. Factors affecting plant growth in winter

Some of the crucial factors influencing the health of the philodendron during the winter months it is the lack of light, the excessive amount of water that could cause root rot and temperature. Let's find out how to take care of this beautiful houseplant, and what are the factors to consider for a lush growth.

Luce

Your philodendron may not be getting enough light if it has tiny leaves or long spaces between them. Move it to a brighter spot, but not in direct sunlight, as it could burn the leaves. Partially shaded areas are ideal for philodendrons.

Acqua

In winter, allow the surface to dry completely between waterings, as aexcessive watering can cause rot and yellow leaves. Since cold water is a shock to these tropical plants, always try to use room temperature water. The leaves of philodendrons can fall due to both excessive watering and a lack of water; therefore, before proceeding it is necessary to understand if it is time to water the plant by checking the dryness of the soil.

Temperature

I philodendrons do not tolerate low temperatures for a long time. These are tropical plants, which can suffer if exposed to extremely low temperatures, cold air and frost. The advice is to place the plant in a warm and bright room, near a window facing east or south: this will give it some warmth that will help it survive in the winter.

Humidity

Philodendrons tolerate dry air, but prefer humidity. Look at the tips of the leaves and if you notice some browning, this is a sign of dry air; if so, you might having to increase the humidity around your plant, perhaps by spraying the leaves often. Fertilizer

During the winter, when development is slower, do not use fertilized; remember that if the plant does not get enough nutrients, it will grow slowly and its leaves will be smaller than usual, this is completely normal in winter.

Cleaning

Closed windows increase the dust andindoor pollution during the winter months. Accumulation of dust and dirt can limit the amount of light reaching the plant, which is very important given the short days. Try gently dusting the leaves, using a soft cloth soaked in water. You can also use spray soap and a few drops of lemon juice to get rid of stubborn dust build-up.

Land

Philodendrons prefer a loose soil rich in organic matter. Also remember that the soil must be well-drained, and that the salt that accumulates due to irrigation is not suitable for the growth of this species, as it causes browning and yellowing of the leaves.
