La SIDS, sadly known syndrome of cot death, is sadly a fairly common phenomenon in Australia. To run for cover, the Pepi-Pod was designed, a sort of tray that creates a protective barrier for the child in the bed.

Sleeping in the same room in close contact with your parents is very good for children and babies, what is called co-sleeping offers many benefits that we have talked about. However, sleeping in the same bed can be risky for very young children. Here then comes a object that allows the newborn to sleep in peace and safety in contact with their parents.

The family is all in the same bed but the little one is well separated by a tray made of 100% virgin polypropylene, one food plastic which does not contain BPA or phthalates. This is precisely the Pepi-Pod of which hundreds of copies will be distributed in Queensland this month with the aim of reducing the number of children dying from SIDS.

The teacher Jeanine Young of the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) said Australia's infant mortality rates are three times higher than in other developed countries. Currently approximately 97% of these deaths are associated with preventable risk factors and therefore it is of fundamental importance to implement strategies to limit this phenomenon as much as possible, which is frequent especially among local indigenous families.

Among the strategies to support families there is precisely the simple but effective idea of this tray that avoids the risk of suffocation accidental. Through local health services the Pepi-Pods will be distributed to approximately 400 Queensland families, in the picture you can see Natasha with her little Zeliciah who have already received it.

It is important to point out that they exist protective factors and on the contrary risk factors for SIDS not to underestimate. As he told Dr. Young:

“If you are a non-smoking and breastfeeding mother, you have a very low risk, even if you share the same bed with the baby. But if you have a baby with low birth weight, premature or exposed to cigarette smoke, drugs and alcohol, who sleeps on a sofa with a parent, then the risk increases ”.
