People with blood type 0 have a lower risk of becoming infected and seriously ill. The new confirmation in two studies

People with blood type 0 may have a lower risk of Covid-19 infection and serious illness.

It seemed clear already from the results of other research, but now a confirmation seems to come from more in-depth investigations: people with blood type 0 may have a lower risk of Covid-19 infection and serious diseases.

Two new studies published in the journal Blood Advances suggest that people with group 0 may be less susceptible than those A and AB. In short, people with blood type O may be less vulnerable to Covid-19 and have a reduced chance of becoming seriously ill.

We had already told you about a research conducted in China that had linked the coronavirus with the different blood groups, to understand if one of them exposes more to the risk of contracting the disease and already on that occasion it seemed that those who have group 0 it would be somehow more protected from Covid-19.

The results of another research also confirmed the role of the blood group in the greater or lesser susceptibility to Covid-19.

People with blood type 0 are less prone to coronavirus. Another study would confirm the hypothesis

Just as research conducted by scientists at the Schleswig-Holstein University Medical Center (UKSH) and the University of Kiel in Norway and Germany, respectively, suggested that people with type A blood type have a higher risk of being infected with the coronavirus and to develop more severe symptoms.

    The new studies

Now, the two studies conducted by experts from Odense University Hospital, the University of Southern Denmark and the University of British Columbia provide further evidence that blood type may play a role in a person's susceptibility to infections.

The researchers compared data from the Danish health registry of more than 473 individuals who tested positive, against a control group of over 2,2 million people.

“Among the positive cases, the number of subjects with blood type 0 was significantly smaller - explains Torben Barington of Odense University Hospital and the University of Southern Denmark. In such an analysis it is essential to select the appropriate control group because the prevalence of the blood group can vary considerably according to the ethnic groups and countries considered ".

“Denmark is a small, ethnically homogeneous country with a public health system and a central registry dedicated to laboratory data - adds Barington. This is why I believe that our work is based on a solid starting point ".

The second survey focuses on symptom analysis, finding a higher likelihood of acute symptoms occurring in patients with blood type A or AB and taking into account Covid-19 patients hospitalized in Vancouver, Canada.

The team found that those with blood type A and AB tended to need mechanical ventilation more.

“The unique aspect of our work - comments Mypinder S. Sekhon of the University of British Columbia - I believe is the attention to the blood group in relation to the severity and susceptibility to the coronavirus. In these investigations we have considered complications to the lungs and kidneys, but in the next studies we will focus on the relationship between the blood group and the effects of the disease on other vital organs ".

Patients with blood groups A and AB, in short, may be more prone to severe symptoms, but, the experts are clear, other analyzes will be needed.
