When to plant peony bulbs

The new season is upon us, with milder days, definitely springy, and brighter. With the arrival of warmer weather, and with longer days, March it's the perfect time to start planting the beautiful peonies.

To enjoy these first blooms from the beginning of summer, it is advisable plant the bulbs from March to April. The reason? The early spring climate offers ideal growing conditions for planting peonies directly into the ground. If you can't plant bulbs now, remember you can do it in October as well.

How to plant peony bulbs

Growing your own peonies is easy, but knowing which variety you are planting is vital. The most common types are the tree peonies and herbaceous peonies. Although both species provide a high yield of vibrant pink flowers, there is a key difference in how they should be planted.

Tree peonies are characterized by their woody shrub structure, and need to be embedded in the ground more deeply, while herbaceous peonies are just the opposite. Let's find out in detail.

How to plant tree peonies from bulbs

plant the woody stem bulb of a tree peony, start by preparing the ground and inserting a lot of organic matter. Choose a semi-shaded location, with good shelter from strong winds and early morning sunlight.

Once the soil is ready, make a deep enough hole and carefully place the bulb in the earth. At this point, cover the roots and water well before letting them grow; you should only have a few red stems sprouting above the ground. Once the peony flowers have finished blooming in early summer, expect the woody stems to shed their leaves and remain bare until the following spring.

How to plant herbaceous peony bulbs

Unlike tree peonies, the herbaceous varieties enjoy full sun, and they need about six hours of exposure per day. These bulbs are smaller and should be planted all the way to the top, leaving little space between the bulb and the ground.

The latter also needs to be rich enough and fertile, but remember to avoid planting your bulb too deep. This species gives minimal growth in the first year after planting, with many red shoots and only one or two small flowers. By the third year, however, herbaceous peonies should also have many large blooms.
