Remya Jose, a Indian girl of only 14 years, gave birth to a pedal washing machine perfect for doing laundry and for keeping fit by pedaling. Everything was born from an old bicycle, of which he recovered the structure and the main parts.

Remya lives at Kizhattoor Panchayat and, thanks to the pedal washing machine, together with his twin sister, takes care of the laundry for the whole family. To save time and effort compared to washing by hand, she decided to try to make an alternative tool that could help her.

Washing clothes by hand at the river is very common in India for all those who do not have a modern washing machine available. After studying the functioning of a common washing machine, Remya decided to test herself and to give life to her project, replacing the electronic components with something he could operate a pedali.

The pedal washing machine resembles a exercise bike. It is equipped with a seat and a basket in which to place the clothes to be washed. In building the washing machine, the girl received help from a local auto shop. To do the laundry, just insert the cloths, water and soap in the space provided.

Leave everything to soak for ten minutes. Then you have to pedal for three to four minutes to allow cleaning of clothes. A small drain tap empties the container, which is then filled with clean water. The final rinsing and spinning phase is achieved by pedaling quickly for another four minutes.

It is the perfect tool for save energy, resources and money, with the possibility of keeping fit at the same time. And it would be an excellent solution for all those who live in areas where there is no access to electricity, a difficulty that makes it impossible to use a common washing machine.
