Peanuts, counterorder: to avoid allergies, it is better to taste them from an early age

Peanuts and allergenic foods: some scientific research in recent years has found that, to avoid the appearance of allergies, it would be better to taste different foods from an early age.

Peanuts, eggs and other particularly allergenic foods: when to offer them to younger children? Always, in the weaning of babies, similar foods have never appeared until after several months or even after a year. The reason is that pediatricians, and consequently parents, have always considered optimal to delay the inclusion of these foods to avoid sensitization or various allergies.

But some scientific research in recent years has rather established the opposite: to avoid the appearance of allergies, it would be better to taste different foods from an early age. Better, that is, anticipate exposure to foods such as peanuts to prevent the development of allergies.

Already a 2015 study confirmed that the introduction of peanuts from very young reduces the risk of developing an allergy to this dried fruit, also demonstrating cases of peanut allergies are scarce in countries where children regularly eat this food.

Now, a new investigation confirms this thought. Starting from the assumption that completely avoiding the intake of potentially allergenic foods could even become the cause of hypersensitivity, some researchers from Imperial College London observed the timing of introduction of allergenic foods during the first year of life and reported the appearance of allergic or autoimmune diseases or allergic sensitization.

The scholars conducted a systematic review of 146 studies from which they derived evidence that the time of introduction of certain allergenic foods into a newborn's diet is associated with the risk of allergic disease, but not of autoimmune disease.

"For example, the introduction of eggs into the diet at an age of 4 to 6 months is associated with a reduced allergy to egg, while the introduction of peanuts between 4 and 11 months of age is directly related to a reduced allergy to peanuts" the researchers write, emphasizing instead that the association between the introduction of fish from 6 to 12 months and reduction of the risk of allergic rhinitis is less evident.

And as for the gluten? The British scholars have come to the conclusion that the timing of introduction of this cereal protein would not be associated with the risk of developing celiac disease, but specify that in any case their investigations should not replace the recommendations of pediatricians.

You follow yours instinct and the diet proposed by the doctor who follows your child. You already know that, of course, like every time a new food is added, any reactions must be evaluated gradually. So, even in the case of peanuts monitor the possible response of your baby's organism. And if no blisters or other symptoms appear, you can give him small amounts a few more times.
