Monsanto & Co. they only set themselves the goal of conquering a real one monopoly on seeds - the seeds of life - necessary for the nourishment of the world population, for the production of our food. Monsanto, and others - Avaaz informs us - are taking action to impose their monopoly on seeds of variety of fruits and vegetables who come consumed daily around the world, such as broccoli, cucumbers and melons.
The fear is that Monsanto and other companies may to create a precedent globally in theimposition of a patent on common seeds. Monsanto's plans must be stopped. In Europe, Avaaz is calling for the intervention of key countries such as Germany, France and the Netherlands, where dissent on the matter is already growing, in order to vote to stop Monsanto's plans for seed patents. The main message of the petition is addressed to the governments of Germany, France, the Netherlands and all the contracting states there European Patent Convention:
“As concerned citizens we encourage you to take the initiative and improve patent legislation urging the Board of Directors of the European Patent Organization to block the loopholes that allow companies to patent plant varieties and traditional cultivation methods. There is a need for clear protections and prohibitions and effective to protect consumers, farmers and growers from the monopoly of multinationals on our food chain ”.
I continue increases in the price of seeds, the obstacles to independent scientific research in agriculture and the environmental impact represent some of the most serious problems linked to Monsanto's desire for a monopoly, which to date, together with two other companies, controls 53% of the seed market.
È necessario claim il private law concerning the legal and moral property on resources such as seeds, which must by definition be public. The imposition of patents prevents us from contributing to the search for new plant varieties born from seeds. The crops are thus reduced to a few varieties, based on the intervention of genetic engineering, with a real rextinction of biodiversity and a grave land impoverishment cultivable.
The signing and dissemination of a petition in this regard can represent an important contribution in creating a mobilization that can start from the bottom and reach out to politicians who will have to decide on it. Monsanto and the other seed multinationals cannot and must not buy the entire "Mother Nature". The largest ever campaign in defense of our food,only true natural food, to be cultivated and produced starting from seeds, needs to be spread.
