Parvo, what is it?

Parvo is one infectious disease which affects dogs, especially puppies. It is also known as transmissible gastroenteritis. The virus responsible is Canine Parvovirus Type 2, very resistant in the environment and to the action of detergents and disinfectants. It is therefore a serious gastroenteritis contracted from the feces of infected subjects.

Parvo, prevention

Parvovirus prevention exists and is a vaccine that can be administered starting from the eighth week of life. As this is a very contagious and deadly disease, it is our responsibility to take care of our four-legged friend's health. The risks, without creating alarmism, however, should not be underestimated because in fact the chances of death from parvovirus are high.

Parvo, what are the symptoms?

Like most viruses, parvo has an incubation period. In this case, it ranges from 3 to 7 days. The virus spreads first to the lymph nodes in the throat and then to the bloodstream, reaching the spinal cord as well. The symptoms are: vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, haemorrhage but also exhaustion and high fever.

Unfortunately, with these symptoms the dog undergoes dehydration, which can lead to the death of the animal within a few hours, if prompt action is not taken to replenish the water and electrolytes lost. Puppies are more at risk precisely because they have lower immune defenses. All these symptoms could be mistaken for a common flu from our four-legged friend, so it is advisable to contact your veterinarian immediately to avoid any risk.

Parvoviros, cura

Only your trusted vet can know what's best for your dog. Surely as soon as parvovirus is diagnosed, the dog will be hydrated and antibiotics will be administered to combat bacterial infections, anti-vomiting and gastroprotective drugs. Remember that parvo is contagious, therefore, infected dogs must be kept away from healthy ones.

Vaccination is an effective preventive measure.
