Pancreatic cancer: beware of this popular pill taken for osteoarthritis, it would feed cancer cells

According to recent research, hyaluronic acid supplements, commonly used for skin and joint well-being, could increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Supplements don't always bring benefits; in fact, according to a new one study, for an popular supplement taken to help improve skin and counter osteoarthritis could increase cancer risk.

THEpancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) it is one of the most aggressive cancers, with no clinically effective treatment options. It is characterized by a intense fibroinflammatory stroma, poor vascularization and rich deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) components.

The microenvironment of a pancreatic tumor is highly stromal, which means that the mass itself is composed primarily of connective tissue and non-cancerous immune cells. L'hyaluronic acid is an important stromal component, and its accumulation has been shown to play a central role in promoting tumorigenesis and disease progression. A systematic review

Hyaluronic acid is a known presence in pancreatic cancers, but this new study by University of Michigan Health Rogel Cancer Center researchers shows thathyaluronic acid also acts as food for cancer cells. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

  • abdominal pain that radiates to the back
  • loss of appetite
  • jaundice
  • I made clear
  • dark urine
  • itchy skin.

The results were recently published in eLife, and provide interesting information on how pancreatic cancer cells grow, pointing to new treatment options. The research team looked at the pancreatic cancer metabolism in preclinical models: how cells obtain nutrients, and the spectrum of nutrients they use to fuel growth and enable therapeutic resistance.

Many people assume hyaluronic acid supplements for its benefits on the skin, particularly to combat dry skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and accelerate wound healing. These supplements can also help relieve joint pain in people with osteoarthritis; in addition, hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the skin, eyes and joints. His main function is to trap water inside the tissue cells, keeping the joints lubricated and, according to the recent study, this could be the driving factor of the increase in cases of pancreatic cancer.

The researchers considered the density of these tumors and wondered: If cancer cells don't have access to blood-derived nutrients, how do they grow? This study demonstrates how well the pancreatic cancer cells harvest nutrients from hyaluronic acid to survive and grow, even resisting treatment.
