They are called pancake ice or pan ice. To look at them they seem fake but it is Nature that creates the conditions that underlie the formation of these ice water lilies. What is it about?

The ice pancakes, whose name relates precisely to the shape reminiscent of the typical dessert of the USA, are ice circles with high edges and a low center. Their diameter ranges from 30 centimeters to 3 meters, also based on the outside temperature. They can be up to 10 centimeters thick.

They form when ice on water breaks and turns in the whirlpool of a river or stream, forming thin circles. At that point, if the temperature is around freezing and the water movement is still moderate, pancake ice will form.

Mud is often deposited inside them. Their edges are higher than the central part because as they spin around and collide with each other, they accumulate material.

How explains the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, sometimes they are formed even at a certain depth, when water bodies of different physical characteristics meet, for example two rivers or two water bodies with waters characterized by different temperatures.

    Where are they formed?

It cannot be predicted. Definitely in the Baltic Sea but recently these unusual water lily shaped ice "pancakes" are appeared in Chicago, on the shores of Lake Michigan. Experts have confirmed that they arise when portions of ice collide. At that point their edges round and rise. This happens as a result of the very cold temperatures brought by the Arctic air currents.

Ice pancakes were formed in 2014 too in Scotland, on the River Dee. That year, they also formed a few kilometers downstream from Queen Elizabeth's summer residence at Balmoral.
