The meat industry, the feed industry and fast food chains still have a close relationship with thePalm oil. According to a new study by a German NGO, according to which almost no company in Germany has committed to at least switch to certified sustainable palm oil. As sustainable as it can ever be.

According to the analyzes, so far only four out of 67 companies in Germany would have committed to converting to certified palm oil along their supply chains. While other companies have only announced that they will introduce misuper their suppliers in the near future. Other companies have so far announced that they will introduce specifications for their suppliers in the near future.

This is what emerges from research conducted by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), a German non-governmental organization in a new report.

According to DUH, the current situation is more than worrying: palm oil is used in animal feed and 113 out of a total of 150.200 tons of palm oil come from unknown and risky sources.

Palm oil plantations are still destroying valuable ecosystems, such as tropical rainforests in many places in the major growing regions of Indonesia and Malaysia. This means further endangering already endangered animal species, such as the orangutan.

Our survey shows that too many companies are not taking responsibility for keeping their products free from deforestation. We urge companies to finally take rainforest protection seriously, says Sascha Müller-Kraenner, Federal CEO of DUH, who also addresses politicians: The Federal Government must act now: its goal for companies to pass completely and voluntarily a 100% deforestation-free and sustainable palm oil by the end of 2020 has not been achieved. The principle of voluntariness has therefore failed. The federal government must now legally guarantee that no uncertified palm oil can be imported.

According to DUH analyzes, major German meat suppliers - including Rothkötter, Tönnies and Sprehe Feinkost - have not yet commented on switching to palm oil without deforestation. The Rothkötter group, which specializes in poultry, operates many of its own animal feed plants. Only Westfleisch has given a confident signal and is initially changing the supply of soybeans - there are still hesitations with palm oil due to the lower quantities.

But is certified palm oil truly sustainable?

No.

To the already very serious situation linked to the deforestation - the certified concessions and areas dedicated to the cultivation of oil palm in recent decades have for example replaced the habitat of endangered mammals and the tropical forests of Sumatra and Borneo - and the consequent death of numerous animals, we go to add the dynamics of the exploitation of child labor and more.
