Padua will turn into an urban forest: 20 thousand trees in 20 years

Twenty years to plant 20 thousand more trees than there are now: the proposal of the environmental department of Padua.

A plan that kicks off today and aims for 2039: a twenty-year path to double the coverage of trees a Padova and add another 20 thousand to the urban green heritage. It is the farsighted proposal of the municipal administration that launches the first draft of the tree management plan, through a project that finally aims to safeguard the trees.

A patrimony that will have to pass from 49 thousand to 77 thousand plants, to increase the coverage of the territory from the current 1,8% to 5%. And then tight controls on plants at risk to avoid tragedies: after the Florence project aimed at planting trees and dedicating them to those you love, it is the turn of the Venetian city, determined to increase the coverage of the city and biodiversity trees in parks and streets.

“Trees are a strategic infrastructure of the city; and future planning - urban planning, maintenance, road conditions - must take into account their needs, which are public health requirements ”, comments Chiara Gallani, councilor for the environment of Padua.

Trees are allies of the climate (remember i ten reasons to plant a tree) and thanks to their function of natural air purifiers, are able to interact with all the elements and mitigate the greenhouse effect by absorbing carbon dioxide and other anthropogenic emissions that modify the climate.

The Tree Management Plan in Padua will essentially have three strategic, long-term objectives:

    • increase the city area with trees
    • diversify the genera and, within them, the species
    • select species that can be resilient to climate change, for example holm oaks

Specifically, everything is aimed at ensuring the main objective which is to increase the urban tree cover, increase the biodiversity of the species present in the city, spread the culture of the tree and its benefits and respond to climate change. The Plan is structured according to a series of actions that start from monitoring, which makes it possible to have a clear idea of the current situation, quantity and quality of the species present in the city and their conditions. Later, they will be identified the species best suited to the current climate and risk situations will be managed.

“We have chosen to draw up a plan of this depth which is so detailed in its actions because to respond to the challenges we face it is necessary to act now, planning with a long-term horizon - says Gallani. Planning is in fact the only way we have to increase the safety of citizens in the face of extreme events and to increase our health and that of our city ”.

The Plan has so far been drawn up in a first draft. The final draft will be examined by the Council Commission and then landed in the City Council.
