Padua: invasion of grasshoppers. Vineyards and corn at risk

An invasion of grasshoppers is putting the crops of the Euganean Hills at risk. It is feared above all for the vineyards and the corn crops

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Un grasshopper invasion threatens the vineyards of the Euganean Hills, in the Padua area. For a few days now, insects have been targeting them vine leaves and corn plants. But the alarm also concerns vegetable gardens, orchards and other crops.

The "evil" animal that is making the province of Padua tremble is the "Barbistes Vicentinus“, Which due to the large amount of rain that has poured into the area in this last period, has found a habitat favorable to its survival. We know that its diet is exclusively phytophagous, that is, one-sided and at the expense of the vegetable, and that its chewing apparatus allows it to devour and literally destroy dozens of hectares of crops.

And this would be precisely the main cause for concern of the farmers of the Doc vineyards. Not only. Over time, the number of grasshoppers is increasing dramatically due to the climatic conditions.

“We are very careful not to underestimate a phenomenon that can cause serious damage to agriculture within a few days,” said Walter Luchetta, director of Coldiretti in Padua. And hope for a immediate intervention: "There is no time to waste, the Province and Parco Colli must implement all the necessary measures to stem the invasion of grasshoppers as early as the next few hours".

Also the Coldiretti of Friuli Venezia Giulia she said she was worried and in a note she let it be known that the large amount of locusts can move within a short time: "From the woods they are moving quickly, even a few hundred meters a day, stopping between the rows of vines and on cultivated fields ".
