Over 6 months of parental leave also for fathers. Finland is really doing it

The new Finnish government led by Sanna Marin has announced its intention to grant all parents the same parental leave, a system that will help promote well-being and gender equality in families, encouraging fathers to dedicate more time to their children .

Minister of Health and Social Affairs, Aino-Kaisa Pekonen, presented the government's new model of family leave at a press conference. "A radical reform"Which concerns families, designed with the aim of strengthening the relationship of parents with their children, also allowing fathers to spend more time with them.

In his opinion, the reform will also make it easier for families to cope with the management of new arrivals, csharing the load that inevitably involves the birth of a child in a more uniform way between the two parents. Furthermore, another goal is to foster equality in the workplace.

The model, the minister stressed, offers more freedom of choice and flexibility compared to the current system. This is intended to increase parental equality and to reconcile work and study or work with family life.

Under the current system, in Finland maternity leave is 4,2 months, while fathers are granted 2,2 months up to the age of two. In addition, another six months of parental leave can be shared. On average, however, only one in four fathers uses what is offered.

With the planned reform in this country, paid parental leave increases to a total of 14 months, which equates to 164 days for each parent. This means that the mother, but also the father, will receive a leave of 6,6 months. Parents are also allowed to transfer 69 days of their share while single moms and dads can use both allowances.

The law also uses gender-neutral language precisely because it does not want to favor subsidies based on this aspect.

If actually implemented (entry into force is expected no earlier than 2021), the reform would cost around 100 million euros more per year than the current system.

To have the most generous European parental leave system, however, with 240 days for each parent, neighboring Sweden will remain.
