Disposable plastic plates and cups are about to be officially banned, so eco-sustainable alternatives such as edible dishes based on wheat bran.

We know wheat bran as it is beneficial for the stomach and intestines and able to promote regularity. An innovative Polish company, the Biotre, he thought instead of using this natural ingredient in an original way to create disposable and biodegradable plates, bowls and cutlery.

As explained on the company's website, the only ingredients with which the dishes are made are wheat bran and water which are fused together using high temperatures and applying some pressure. No chemicals are used in the creation of this line designed to be used only once and then added to the compost.

The dishes and bowls are microwave resistant and can be used with both hot and cold food. However Biotrem warns customers not to use wheat bran products to serve hot liquids such as tea, coffee or soups and even carbonated drinks.

As for forks and knives, these have a much lower wheat bran content than plates and bowls. These utensils are made with only 10% wheat bran and 90% polylactide, which is a biodegradable thermoplastic polyester made from corn.

The environmental benefit of using dishes like this is not just related to waste reduction. According to the Warsaw-based company, to produce 1 kg of wheat bran dishes considering the process of growing the wheat, transport, processing and use, about 1,3 kg of CO2 are released into the atmosphere compared to 8,5 kg deriving from the production of 1 kg of disposable plastic plates and glasses.

However, these edible dishes also have a disadvantage: as they contain grain they cannot be used by celiac or gluten intolerant people. Fortunately, there are already several other alternatives such as plates, glasses and cutlery made of corn or made of other biodegradable and gluten free ingredients.

It is hoped that soon these solutions, which will send disposable plastic permanently into retirement, will become affordable for everyone both in terms of price and diffusion on the market.
