And if there wallpaper or could the furniture items produce electricity? Having clean energy in your homes would be even easier. A possibility made a little closer by a team of Finnish scientists who have devised a special "Leaf" made with organic materials to be used both inside and outside the houses, able to transform sunlight into electricity.

Scientists from the VTT Technical Research Center have already developed the prototype of a tree che collects solar energy from the environment and transforms it into energy to power small devices such as cell phones, dehumidifiers, thermometers and LED bulbs.

Looking at it, the prototype resembles a small tree complete with decorated leaves. They are actually gods flexible photovoltaic panels made through a simple printing process. The leaves form a complete electronic wiring system that conducts energy into a converter which in turn supplies electrical power to the devices. The trunk, on the other hand, is made with 3D printing using wood-based biomaterials, specially developed by VTT.

But what does wallpaper have to do with it? The basic system is the same. In fact, the VTT has developed and used a mass production method based on printing technologies for the production of decorative organic photovoltaic panels.

In fact, the new method allows you to create interior design elements. The panels can, for example, be placed on the windows and walls of the house but also on cars and advertising billboards.

The solar panel produced by the VTT is only about 0,2mm thick and inside it also encloses the electrodes and polymer layers in which the light is collected.

The researchers tested the feasibility of the method by printing leaf-shaped photovoltaic cells. The active surface of one of them is 0,0144 m2. Two hundred leaves cover one square meter of surface. The result? 3,2 amps of electricity with 10,4 watts of power in Mediterranean latitudes.

The solar panels were produced with machines based on conventional printing methods using the roll-to-roll method, which allows for rapid mass production of the products: each machine can produce up to 100 meters of layered film per minute.

The advantages? Production is cost-effective, material consumption is low, and after use, the panels can be recycled.
