Organic milk richer in Omega 3 than traditional milk

Heart health and Omega 3. There is a great deal more in organic milk than in traditional milk.

After telling us that the organic milk was poor in nutrients in particular iodine and zinc, now a new research shows instead how this type of milk is qualitatively better because richer in essential fatty acids and therefore can contribute to the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

A group of researchers from the Washington State University’s Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources (CSANR) who published their study data on PlosOne.

Scientists compared the fat content of 384 whole milk samples (organic and non-organic) finding that the levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, considered beneficial for the heart, were far higher in organic milk. In particular it concerns the Omega 3 (+ 65% in organic milk), and of Omega 6 (-25% in organic milk). I take into account that our diet is very unbalanced in favor of Omega 6 and lacking instead of Omega 3, this type of milk, according to scholars, would bring this ratio in more acceptable proportions.

What makes organic milk richer in Omega 3 is the lifestyle and diet that the cows follow which, kept on pasture, eat grass and forage unlike the animals that produce milk in traditional farms, which instead spend most of their time indoors and are fed with industrial feed based on corn and cereals.

One cannot fail to emphasize the fact that the research was requested and partly financed by the American Organic Valley, one of the largest associations of organic producers in the US. But it is also good to remember that those who do not drink milk (or eat fish) can safely continue not to do so since Omega 3s are also present in various foods of plant origin.
