The properties of hemp seeds and milk

I hemp seeds contain essential amino acids e protein, as well as beneficial fatty acids. The hemp milk obtained from them is one energizing drink, considered suitable for strengthening the body and protecting it from disease. Hemp milk contains vitamin A and vitamin E, as well as omega 3 fatty acids. It is also a source of mineral salts, among which we find potassium, iron and magnesium. Preparing hemp milk at home means avoiding products containing thickeners, emulsifiers or preservatives, as well as not accumulating packages in Tetra pak among the waste.

Where to buy hemp seeds

Organic hemp seeds to be used for homemade hemp milk preparation can be purchased online and, in natural food stores and in herbalist's shop, where there may also be the possibility to order them. Check the labels and wordings on the packages of hemp seeds to verify that they come from organic farming.

To prepare about 1 liter of organic hemp milk you will need:

200 grams of organic hemp seeds
1,2 liters of tap water
Sweetener to taste (optional)
1 fine mesh strainer, kitchen towel or filter paper
1 blender (not immersion)
1 glass bottle
1 bowl
1 funnel

Start making hemp milk by pouring it into mixer hemp seeds and a part of the necessary water (less than half), together with the sweetener (if you want to add it). Blend everything until the seeds are chopped as much as possible, gradually pouring the rest of the water. It only takes a few minutes. At this point you can filter hemp milk from the blender to the bowl or directly into the bottle, using a funnel and a sieve, or using filter paper or a clean kitchen towel (possibly not washed with industrial detergents).



Optional additional ingredients, in addition to sweeteners (whole cane sugar or rice malt, for example) may include a tablespoon of blanched almonds or some banana slice, to be blended together with hemp seeds, to make its taste more full-bodied, or a pinch of pink Himalayan salt or fine whole salt, to make it more decisive and suitable for savory preparations.

How to use hemp okara

From the preparation of hemp milk you will obtain one "Pulp" of hemp seeds which, for convenience, we will call okara, as in the case of soy milk. The hemp okara can be pressed inside a container, surmounted by a weight or a wooden tablet, in order to compact it and obtain a sort of Hemp “tofu”. Or it can be used for the preparation of savory recipes, for example as an additional ingredient in the preparation of potato or carrot croquettes and in the making of rustic pies stuffed with vegetables.

How to use milk of hemp

Hemp milk can be drunk at breakfast or as a snack as an energizing drink. It can also be used for the preparation of fruit smoothies and homemade ice cream, as well as in replacement of cow's milk or other vegetable drinks in recipes that require them, such as cakes or biscuits.


Storage of hemp milk

Homemade hemp milk can be stored without problems in the refrigerator for 2 or 3 days. A glass bottle with an airtight cap must be used for added safety. The bottle must also be perfectly clean. To clean the inside of glass bottles it is recommended to use water and bicarbonate: dissolve a spoonful of bicarbonate in 1 liter of water, pour into the bottle with a funnel, finally plug the bottle, shake, rinse well and let it drain the bottle by placing it upside down on the sink.
