One with the birds: the modular tree tent made of bamboo

Curtains have a special charm. For millennia, they have been considered a house that moved with its owners during long nomadic migrations. Today they are used for camping and vacations, but in some situations they have been transformed into luxury homes. Or even in small hotels, as happened to the Penda team of architects who designed a special hotel to participate in the AIM Legend of the Tent competition

A bit of a tent, a bit of a tree house, which can be assembled and disassembled in a modular way as if it were a beehive. They are the special curtains designed to transform into little ones hotels designed by the team of architects of Penda to participate in the AIM Legend of the Tent competition, worthy of the best glamping sites.

In common with the classic tents there is the location, surrounded by greenery. The name says it all: “One with the birds". That's right, the building stands right on the trees like a nest. But that's not all yet. It is in fact a modular, portable hotel (in the sense that it can be easily disassembled and rebuilt elsewhere) and entirely built with bamboo chopsticks.

The goal of the Penda designers? Bring guests as close as possible to nature without causing the slightest harm.

The structure is inspired by tepee of Native Americans, who leave no trace on the site, nor on the material itself, because the joints are connected with ropes, so that the tents are easy to build, deconstruct and transport.

How is the hotel built? Bamboo joints are created by placing bamboo canes in an X shape. The beams are then tied with rope, rather than nailed, keeping the bamboo intact so as not to damage it and reuse it to create hotel-tents elsewhere. At the base of each "room" there are horizontal rods that serve to support the floor. A pattern that can be repeated endlessly to increase the width and height of the structure.

"The size of each tent is 4,7 meters, so quite narrow, but eight structural beams are combined in various joints, so that the system is able to support a lot of weight", he said Precht, one of the creators. The frame also comes slightly raised off the ground, so that changes in ground levels are not felt.

“With a flexible and connected structural system that ensures comfortable spaces, we have the ability to create a variety of buildings of different sizes. according to the requirements. The size and quantity can grow: from single rooms to a family structure, ”explains the team. “The goal was to create a connection that leaves no impact on the site, nor any damage to the bamboo itself. So after the temporary hotel is deconstructed, the materials can be reused as scaffolding on a construction site or reused for another temporary hotel in another place ”.

The system could also be used to offer shelter in emergency situations.

The team is now looking for partners to work on larger facilities to build large temporary hotels.
