Old telephone booths in Lyon are transformed into tropical aquariums

There is hardly any trace of telephone booths in our cities. Most of the time they have been removed, and if there were any left, they are no longer used. How to enhance the abandoned telephone booths in order to transform them into a tourist attraction? For example, by transforming them into a colorful tropical aquarium, which in France has managed to attract the attention of hundreds of tourists, as a disused telephone booth could never have done.

Of the telephone booths there is hardly any trace left in our cities. Most of the time they have been removed, and if there were any left, they are no longer used. But there are those who have thought of making abandoned telephone booths a real tourist attraction, turning them into a colorful tropical aquarium in that Francia has managed to attract the attention of hundreds of tourists, as a disused telephone booth could never have done.

“Phone Booth Aquarium” was built in the city of Lyon on the occasion of the traditional Festival of Lights (Fête des lumières) and has been described as a fantastic creative idea aimed at reviving unused infrastructures. It was born from a collaboration between the light designer Benoit Deseille and the artist Benedetto Bufalino, who described the birth of the idea for his own creation in this way:

“With the spread of cell phones, telephone booths have remained unused. We tried to rediscover them using their glass walls for the realization of a aquarium rich in exotic and multicolored species, symbol of an invitation to escape to distant destinations and to travel ". The phone booth was carefully sealed so that there was no water leakage or that someone could accidentally open or damage it.

The installation made up one of the main attractions of the party dedicated to the light that is held every year in Lyon on the occasion of a religious celebration of thanksgiving since the population of the French city largely survived theplague epidemic of 1643. On the occasion of the festival, the city lights up with hundreds of colors and lights, including candles and lanterns placed by the inhabitants on the windowsills.

Sure, there would be from wondering if tropical fish are happy to be finished in this forced symbiosis with pedestrians, cars and cell phones. And since it is not the first time that telephone booths are used for the creation of new and unexpected attractions, if in doubt, it is better to admire them without being alive in version mini-libraries.
