Octopus farms: sales start for the first time in the world, suffering is served

In Spain the first octopus farm in the world is about to open, the cruel business will start as early as next summer

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Animal welfare associations and scientists were determined to oppose the cruelty of octopus farming, but in the end it was the thirst for profit that prevailed. The Spanish multinational New Pescanova has no intention of giving up and wants to go through with the creation of the world's first commercial octopus farm. The company plans to launch the farmed shellfish on the market as early as next summer and aims to export them to other countries by 2023. The multinational's goal is to be able to produce 3 tons of octopuses a year.

The Nueva Pescanova plant will be built near the port of Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands. For decades now, society has been carrying out research to implement what animal rights activists believe (but also according to the opinion of numerous scientists) would be a crazy and inhumane plan. The company ensures that it will take into account the welfare of these extraordinary animals, but the idea itself is unhealthy.

“The Nueva Pescanova Group's commitment to aquaculture as a complementary activity to fishing aims to ensure the availability of marine resources for future generations, while promoting greater protection of wild fishing areas,” explains the company.

Because raising octopuses is a great cruelty

Numerous animal welfare organizations are opposing the construction of the first octopus farm, including the Spanish Animalist Party (Pacma).

“It's an aberration, they are very sensitive animals. Locking them in cages and then consuming them and killing them in the cruellest way after a miserable life is not acceptable. We have contacted all the competent administrations and we are ready to demonstrate in front of the Pescanova plants when they open ”declared Cristina García, vice president of Pacma, during a protest organized a few weeks ago.

It is an aberration that there is an attempt to open an octopus farm in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria! This past Saturday we gathered before the @AyuntamientoLPA to show our rejection and demand that they stop this madness.#StopGranjasDePulpos #FreeOctopus pic.twitter.com/QfiRyOe8mB

The NGO "Compassion in World Farming" also echoed the Spanish Animalist Party, which in a report published a few months ago had defined the project to raise octopuses as a "recipe for disaster", listing 8 good reasons to stop this plan.

“Octopuses are fascinating, curious, sentient creatures with individual personalities of their own. - the activists reiterated, who said they were ready to continue their battle against Nueva Pescanova - Despite this, there are those who want to lock them in a breeding cage.

Octopus are fascinating, inquisitive, sentient creatures with individual personalities. Despite this there are plans to confine them in factory farms.

Some scientific studies also argue that breeding these extraordinary molluscs is not a good idea at all. Among these, the research recently carried out by the London School of Economics stands out which confirms that the breeding of octopuses is not compatible with their well-being, given that the octopus is an extremely intelligent, sensitive and by its nature solitary animal. So in confined spaces in close contact with his peers he risks becoming aggressive and suffering.

Among other things, in countries such as the United Kingdom these marine creatures have been recognized as sentient beings to be protected. It is a pity that Spain is going in the opposite direction (as if intensive farming of animals such as cows, pigs and fish subjected to physical stress and suffering such as salmon were not already enough ...).
