Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world and, as is well known, the grounds can be reused in many ways. In Ukraine, however, there are those who have thought of turning them into fashionable sunglasses!

Ochis Coffe is the name of the brand that, thanks to a fundraiser on Kickstarter, has managed to produce a line of sunglasses on a large scale made with organic coffee waste. The mastermind of this brilliant project is Max Gavrilenko who has found a way to compress the coffee grounds into a compound (also made of linen and a biopolymer based on vegetable oil) which is then transformed thanks to a digital machine into frames for eyeglasses.

The passion for glasses is the family business, as Max said, his father owned an optical shop and a laboratory where the boy studied glasses from an early age. His passion for ecology brought him closer to the idea of creating new models that are not only beautiful and comfortable but also greener.

Why coffee? Max actually experimented with other food ingredients like mint, parsley, buckwheat and rice first but the coffee proved better and by the way, as he stated:

“In the world, more than 2,5 billion cups of coffee are drunk during the day. As a result, a huge amount of coffee residues go untreated and simply go to waste. In reality, it is a huge amount of merchandise available for the production of any item. In the meantime, I started with sunglasses "

Now Gavrilenko has launched a new collection where there are improvements compared to last year. The lenses are in fact made of recycled cotton and a UV filter has been added to protect the eyes and a hydrophobic coating able to repel water and dirt.
