Oceans to collapse: by 2050 there will be no more fish

Oceans to collapse: by 2050 there will be no more fish

With the warming of the waters and the acidification of the oceans, the marine food chain also risks collapse

Warm oceans e pollution and the damage is felt even in the mari. And not just in regards to the gradual disappearance of and of birds, but also for the risk that the marine food chain is running, that with the water heating andocean acidification it doesn't exactly go hand in hand.

Indeed, important ecosystems could be massively damaged by 2050 unless greenhouse gas emissions and localized pollution are drastically reduced.

The warning comes from new research from the Australian University of Adelaide, which has examined theimpact of climate change on marine ecosystems and their species in the near future, with the result that the food chains of the world's oceans are clearly at risk of collapsing precisely because of the release of greenhouse gases, overfishing and localized pollution.

The study was based on 632 experiments conducted in the world's oceans, from tropical to arctic waters, from coral reefs to the open sea, and found that climate change is gradually disintegrating the diversity and abundance of marine species.

Scholars have based their hypotheses on the impact of short-term stressors and long-term stressors.

“We didn't expect long-term studies to show such deleterious effects,” says marine biologist Ivan Nagelkerken. "Looking at the individual effects of stress - just global warming or just acidification - for some species we see no effect and for other species a negative effect, but when you combine the two, you usually see a larger effect. ".

The result? The acidification will undoubtedly cause further reduction of oceanic plankton production of dimethyl-sulfide gas, which does nothing but aggregate the particles of water vapor in the atmosphere, help the formation of clouds and create a sort of shielding from the incoming solar radiation (for this reason it is considered a limiting of the greenhouse effect). More, the oceans absorb about a third of all the carbon dioxide emitted by the combustion of fossil fuels.

Not only, therefore, polluted water, sewage and overfishing: if no solutions are found, climate change will also make things worse in the oceans.

“We also found that animals higher up the food chain, including large predators, are much more likely to be hit harder by climate change than species further down. Some species will benefit, primary producers such as plankton and algae, but not larger fish species. There is a fear of a progressive collapse of the species, from the top of the food chain downwards ”.

"Run for cover", in short, seems to be the warning also regarding life in the oceans. Doesn't the load of sins we are carrying out, willy-nilly, bearers seem a bit excessive to you?
