A beautiful gesture that made by Jennifer Smith, a 41-year-old nurse from New York, who decided to adopt Boomer, the dog of one of her patients who, due to walking problems, had been forced to part with his four-legged best friend.

Shortly before being hospitalized at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Rome, where the nurse is operative, 60-year-old John Burley had in fact greeted Boomer, leaving him with a broken heart at the Humane Society of Rome, a local association that deals with abandoned dogs and cats or renunciation of ownership.

Burley had told Jennifer how heartbreaking the separation had been and kept making him sick, so the nurse didn't think twice and decided to adopt herself her dog.

A gesture that moved everyone, volunteers and colleagues, even considering the dog's advanced age: 13 years.

Jennifer Smith went to the shelter where Boomer was waiting for a new family, paid the adoption fee, signed the documents and brought the sweet old man home.

    But that's not all

Knowing how special the bond between Boomer and John was, the nurse decided to buy the dog a Christmas coat and take him to the health facility where his former beloved owner was staying.

Once they arrived, he asked John Burley if he would like to have visitors and the 60-year-old accepted in surprise. He could never imagine that his beloved Boomer could show up from the door of a rehabilitation center, on Jennifer's leash.

John Burley burst into tears in a mixture of irrepressible happiness and gratitude. Incredibly happy to be able to caress and cuddle his little Boomer and infinitely grateful to Jennifer for saving him and for taking care of him in the best possible way.

Throughout the rehabilitation period, Boomer visited his master, thus becoming therea mascot of the center and interacting with everyone. Knowing his dog in good hands and having the chance to see him motivated Burley to treat him.

This certainly was the best Christmas gift that the 60-year-old could receive.
