A cat died from intoxication due to cleaning its paws with bleach, done by owners for fear of coronavirus

A cat died of intoxication due to cleaning its paws with bleach, done by the owners for fear of coronavirus infection. It happens in Crema, but unfortunately it is not an isolated case and the fault of bad information.

"Dogs and pets in general do not transmit the coronavirus," explains the Ministry of Health. And we have been repeating this for some time now. As we repeat that the paws of cats and dogs they absolutely must not be cleaned with bleach, even if diluted. The ministry writes:

"On returning from walks, to protect our friend it is advisable to provide for his hygiene, especially clean the paws avoiding aggressive products and alcohol-based products that can induce irritative phenomena, causing itching and instead using products without the addition of perfume (eg water. and neutral soap). For the coat it is advisable to brush it and then wipe it with a damp cloth ".

The same thing was said by theHigher Institute of Health who advised on returning from a walk, to "wash the dog's paws with soap and water, similarly to what we do with our hands, taking care to dry them well and in any case it is advisable to avoid letting them climb with their paws on surfaces with which let's get in touch ".

Yet unfortunately there are those who have not heeded these advice and have used bleach improperly, certainly causing the death of their cat unintentionally. The alarm is raised by Laura Gatti, a veterinarian from Vaiano who has already had two cases of intoxication on cats and who recommends disinfecting the paws with sanitizing wipes for animals with chlorhexidine. But why are there those who use bleach? Unfortunately, during a well-known television broadcast, a veterinarian advised using bleach to disinfect the paws of dogs and cats.

A statement from which not only numerous colleagues of the veterinarian in question have distanced themselves, but also the Higher Institute of Health. And then we reiterate it once again, because obviously there is still a need to do it, on cats and dogs it is absolutely not necessary to use bleach which could not only burn their paws, but also create lethal intoxication, as in the case of the poor cat of Crema.
