A study has revealed that genetic factors are at the heart of good sleep, which can protect against the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

According to the researchers, some people are endowed with certain genes, which contain the benefits of sleep in a time window of as little as 5 or 6 hours a night, instead of the traditional 8. Furthermore, they have stated that these individuals show psychological resilience and resistance to neurodegenerative diseases.

There is a dogma that everyone needs eight hours of sleep, but this new study confirms that the amount of sleep people need differs based on genetics. Hence, there is no perfect amount of hours, as each person is different. (Read also: Alzheimer's: study links disease to sleep loss and circadian rhythm for the first time)

A systematic review

For more than a decade, researchers have studied people with Familial Natural Short Sleep (FNSS), those who normally sleep little, and who are distinguished by the ability to function well even if they are alone. sleeping five to six hours a night. They have shown that it works and it is possible, and they have identified five genes that play a crucial role in all of this.

This study tested the hypothesis that sleep can be a shield against neurodegenerative diseases. This analysis, therefore, somewhat contrasts with the belief that, for many people, lack of sleep can accelerate neurodegeneration.

Research data has shown that the brain can perform all its tasks even with fewer hours of sleep; in other words, less time spent sleeping efficiently may not equate to a lack of sleep.

Sleep problems are common in all brain diseases, because sleep is a complex activity in which many parts of the brain have to work together to make us fall asleep and wake up. When these parts are damaged, it becomes more difficult to sleep or have quality sleep.

Understanding the basics biological regulation of rest could help identify medications that will help ward off sleep-related problems. Additionally, improved rest in healthy people can help support overall well-being and improve quality of life.
