The Catalan city of Barcelona is experiencing its moment of rebirth thanks to the initiatives of an innovative and forward-looking mayor, Ada Colau, whose goal is to reform the city to make it greener and more resilient to the effects of climate change.

The first and most important green urban regeneration project is undoubtedly the creation of "green corridors" in the city center, increasing the public green space and preventing the circulation of cars - with the consequent reduction also of pollution and urban smog. The goal is to inhibit the passage of cars four important urban arteries and to transform them into pedestrian areas decorated with the characteristic tiles of Barcelona (Panot de flor in the Catalan language), in which trees and flowers will be planted: the birth of about 400 new trees and 8.000 square meters of public green. In these new roads it will be possible to circulate on foot or by bicycle, a vehicle that does not pollute and does not release emissions into the atmosphere; only residents or for loading and unloading services will be allowed to use the cars.

Here then is that part of the streets of Consell de Cent, Rocafort, Comte Borrell and Girona will be transformed into green axes. It is also planned to build four large squares, each of about 2.000 square meters, at the confluence of these axes. Only nine months are foreseen for the realization of the project: the start of the works is scheduled for July 2022 and the completion in the first quarter of 2023.

The project is part of the great municipal plan for the transformation of the public space and the improvement of all the districts of the city, Superilla Barcellona, to support the resident population in facing the three challenges of our time - the social challenge, that environmental deriving from the climate and economic crisis (consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic).

The plan, strongly supported by the first town, also provides for the widening of the sidewalks (all over 4 meters), the expansion of cycle paths and the urban bike sharing service, the improvement of the public transport line; in addition, making more green spaces available for walking will also improve local commerce. According to the mayor, Barcelona will become a safer and healthier place, suitable for pedestrians.
