New Zealand Prime Minister Ardern promises 100% renewable energy by 2030

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern pledged to reach 100% renewable energy by 2030

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

He said this before taking office in 2017, promising to focus on tackling the climate crisis during his first election campaign. And now New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is relaunching, with the goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2030 if her party wins re-election in October.

In announcing the new commitment, Ardern linked the goal to a green recovery after the crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

"The post-COVID-19 economic recovery presents a unique opportunity for generation to remodel New Zealand's energy system to make it more renewable, faster, more affordable and safer," he said.

Ardern thus increases its previous goal of phasing out non-renewable energy by 2035, cutting it by 5 years. The country currently produces 84% of its electricity from renewable sources. However, these only represent 40% of the energy actually used in the country, as New Zealand still imports coal and oil from abroad.

The green plan also includes the electrification of transport and industry, by investing in new technologies such as green hydrogen. Its detractors point the finger at the new energy plan, which they say would cause job losses and increase electricity costs by up to 40%.

    But Ardern confidently replies:

“Investing in renewable energies will create jobs. Our plan will create jobs and develop the highly skilled workforce our future economy needs to thrive. The clean energy plan is one element of the broader COVID-19 recovery plan and the work that will prepare New Zealand for the future by stimulating jobs and the economy now. "

The election, delayed due to the coronavirus, is scheduled for October 17. We'll see…
