They were restoring the ancient temple of Amenhotep III at Luxor researchers led by archaeologist Dr. Horig Sorosian, when they stumbled upon an extraordinary discovery. A pair of sphinxes in limestone, measuring about 8 meters, which could depict the ancient ruler Amenhotep III, whose reign lasted from 1390 to 1353 BC in the XNUMXth dynasty, with mongoose-shaped headdress, beard and necklace. On the chest of the sphinx was also found "the beloved god Amon-RA".

But archaeologists, as reported by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, have also discovered 3 practically intact statues of the goddess Sekhmet, a divinity with a lioness head and a woman's body, and some inscriptions on a sandstone wall with scenes dedicated to the royal jubilee. , called heb-sed, - an ancient Egyptian festival that recognized - and renewed - the king's right to rule.

It was celebrated in the thirtieth year of Pharaoh's reign, although most of them died earlier, and Amenhotep III was one of the few to celebrate it in an apparently very elaborate way.

Dr. Horig Sorosian, head of the mission, underlined the importance of this discovery, as the discovery of the two huge statues in the shape of a Sphinx confirm the position of the beginning of the procession road, a place of ceremonies and important celebrations.

These pieces were moved from the places where they were discovered inside the temple for restoration and reinstallation, where the original colors of many of them appeared, in preparation for relocating them to their original locations in the temple. The various pieces have been temporarily moved in order to be adequately restored, once the work is completed they will be relocated to their original positions.
