That fine powder of white salt, known as sodium bicarbonate and commonly sold in all supermarkets, is used above all to wash vegetables, sanitize surfaces but also to treat indigestion or heartburn thanks to its alkalizing action.

There are so many uses of sodium bicarbonate but few know that it can also be useful in agriculture as a fungicide thanks to its disinfectant power that prevents and eliminates the presence of different species of fungi that commonly attack plants. This is also due to its alkalizing effect which prevents the creation of that favorable environment for the proliferation of fungi which, as is well known, love acidic environments.

In particular, sodium bicarbonate acts as a natural fungicide on:

  • Gray mold (Botrytis cinerea): manifests itself with the formation of a brown to gray mass of cottony which leads to the decay of flowers, fruits and soft tissues of plants. This fungus often attacks strawberries, broccoli and, as ornamental plants, roses.
  • Rhizoctonia solani: it manifests itself with damage or lesions at the base of the stem (plant collar) when this is soft causing it to break and consequently the death of the plant. Quite common in beans, chili, spinach, potatoes, and tomatoes.
  • Ascomycota mushrooms: these cause the famous powdery mildew, also called white disease, fog or albugine, a disease that affects different types of plants: vines, beets, artichokes, tomatoes, etc.

This natural ingredient can also be used for the prevention and treatment of downy mildew, a plant disease caused by several families of fungi.

Fungicide bicarbonate spray

To prepare a bicarbonate spray with fungicidal power you will need:

  • 1 liter of water
  • 4 g of baking soda
  • 1 spray container

Preparation

Add about two tablespoons of baking soda (4 grams) to a liter of water and mix so that it dissolves completely, then pour into the spray container and apply to the plants with a gentle (fine drop) spray. The bicarbonate fungicide must be applied to the entire aerial part of the plants and in particular to the leaves on both the upper and lower parts.

Two weekly applications are recommended in the periods of the year in which there are low temperatures and high humidity, or those in which the most favorable conditions are created for the development of fungi.

It is very important to prepare only the quantity necessary for use from time to time, that is, it is not advisable to make the spray in advance and keep it for more than a day without using it as in this way the mixture will lose its healing properties.

Do not worry about the possible harmful effect of baking soda on plants, this ingredient does not cause any wilting or even death of any flower or crop. The only important thing is never to irrigate the land with water and bicarbonate but only spray on the plants.
