Amber scent, warm, delicately spiced, many know theessential oil of myrrh as a powerful aromatic useful for giving vigor and energy, but few know that it can also be used as a natural medicinal treatment. A new study has indeed shown that myrrh essential oil also has significant healing benefits, including faster wound healing and protection from bacterial infections.

What most people recognize as myrrh is actually the hardened resin of the myrrh plant (Commiphora myrrha), which is used as perfume and incense. It is used in traditional Ethiopian medicine and since ancient times, so much so that in the Bible it is said to have been one of the gifts given to Jesus by the three wise men of the East.

Precisely in traditional Ethiopian medicine the essential oil of myrrh is used to heal wounds. But a study published in the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Journal had looked into the benefits of this application by focusing not only on the resin, but also on the essential oil, came to a conclusion: both myrrh essential oil and resin can improve wound healing thanks to antibacterial effects.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers used two ointments: one had 4% essential oil and the other had 5% resin. Both then applied them topically to a range of participants, examined their toxicity, and tested the ointments for antimicrobial activity in bacterial cultures.

Well, according to the authors, the concentrations used in the study were found to be non-toxic and non-irritating and the ointments had accelerated wound healing. In addition, they both increased the rate of wound contraction and the skin's resistance to breaking, decreasing the time to epithelialization.

Both the resin and the essential oil had antibacterial effects comparable to those of commonly used antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria - although they did not have a strong impact against fungal pathogens.

Myrrh, therefore, is not only a very valid healing and cell regenerator, which finds application in the treatment of skin lesions (such as ulcerations, cracks, irritations, lacerations, inflammations, burns and redness conditions), but it can also be useful to heal skin lesions. wounds.

What are the other benefits of myrrh essential oil?

Myrrh has great health effects in general, such as:

  • It has powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants are chemicals that help prevent oxidative damage to cells, and myrrh can protect the liver from lead toxicity-induced damage while improving the body's natural antioxidant and immune defense mechanisms.
  • It can protect against the cancer. A study conducted in China found that extracts and compounds derived from myrrh resin may prove effective against cancer cells in human reproductive organs
  • It can relieve the neuropathic pain. Neuropathy is characterized by painful sensations in different parts of the body even without external stimuli and is caused by nerve damage. Research has suggested that aqueous extracts of myrrh and frankincense can be used to treat neuropathic pain
  • It can relieve rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, myrrh has been found to help reduce rheumatoid arthritis pain, thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
