What are five sunflowers doing in a school? They produce electricity. And even a lot if you consider that they are able to meet almost all the energy needs of the school complex. We are at the Muse School in California. Here JamesCameron provided the solution to power the campus without producing polluting emissions.

This is not just any school, actually, but the first vegan school for children where, among other things, the wife of the director of Avatar, Suzy Amis, a well-known environmental activist who he said:

"My husband is truly amazing and he knows how to give a woman a bouquet of flowers."

Cameron designed the Solar Sun Flowers for her as a gift when she was looking for a way to bring renewable energy to the Muse School, which she co-founded with sustainability as its goal.

I five photovoltaic sunflowers have recently been installed on an area of approximately 9 acres, the Malibu Canyon within the campus and are generating about 300 kWh per day.

A digital dashboard was also developed to precisely control the amount of energy generated by the sunflower and that consumed by the Muse.

The goal is to satisfy and compensate for the energy consumption of the school attended by children and young people (aged 2 to 14) for a percentage between 75 and 90 percent, in view of the more ambitious target in the future of 100 percent. In addition, the patent-pending design will be made available free of charge and open-source to encourage wider use.

With a diameter of almost 5 meters and a height of 10, the photovoltaic systems have been designed taking inspiration from the sunflower, the flower that rotates to “chase” the sun. Not surprisingly since that too they move following its path to produce a greater amount of energy. Inside there is in fact a tracker that uses astronomical calculations to determine the position of the sun. An anemometer is used to measure the wind speed, and when it is too high, the system closes, flattening out.

Cameron has already proved himself to be a great innovator, not just from a cinematic point of view. In 2012 he was the first to dive to record depths in the Mariana Trench. Just then, about three years ago while he was in Sydney with his wife planning the venture, he was looking for a special birthday present. It was then that he thought of a very special bouquet of flowers.

Suzy Amis Cameron, who co-founded the School Muse with her sister, Rebecca Amis, explained that the Solar Sun Flowers they will be incorporated into the school's science program. Suzy had already distinguished herself for making sure that Muse was the first vegan school.

Students will be given a tool to visualize Sun Flowers' figures in terms of "compensation", that is, the number of trees planted, houses powered by clean energy, gas saved and carbon dioxide avoided from the atmosphere along with the liters of water saved, and used instead by a coal plant.

Also IBM had devised a similar project. A photovoltaic sunflower capable not only of producing electricity but also heat and drinking water.
