A tongue straight from antiquity. A mockery for us who live in an age of uncertainty? In Egypt, a team of archaeologists has just found a mummy dating back to 2000 years ago, with a peculiarity: it has a perfectly preserved golden tongue.

Another discovery comes from Egypt and in particular from what was once the site of Taposiris Magna. Here a group of scientists from the University of Santo Domingo made a bizarre find. Archaeologists, led by Kathleen Martinez, discovered the mummy in one of the 16 tombs of Taposiris Magna, which boasts temples dedicated to Osiris and Isis. A hoard of coins decorated with the face of Cleopatra VII was found in the same place in the past, suggesting that the temples were in use during the queen's reign.

But the latest finding concerns a particular mummy, with the strange organ in plain sight. The Egyptian Antiquities Ministry assumes that the embalmers may have placed the golden tongue on the mummy to ensure that the deceased could speak in the afterlife. For example, if the golden-tongued mummy had met Osiris, the god of the underworld, she would have been able to speak to the god.

However, the mystery about the material with which it was made remains. Along with the mummy, 15 other tombs have been found all dating back to around 2.000 years ago and contain a notable treasure. In one of them there is a female mummy with a death mask that covers most of her body and depicts her with a headdress while she smiles. Two of the mummies were found with the remains of scrolls, which scholars are currently analyzing and deciphering. The plastered layers enclosing one of these mummies have gilded decorations dedicated to Osiris.

Researchers also found several statues depicting people buried at the site. Some are so well preserved that the hairstyles can still be distinguished. It is not known exactly when these individuals died but for archaeologists the time frame is that in which Egypt was ruled by the Ptolemies (from 304 BC to 30 BC), the descendants of one of Alexander the Great's generals.
