Multi-purpose creams: find paraffin and traces of mineral oils. Neutrogena the worst of the test, Lidl the best

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Face and body skin creams are among the most used cosmetic products. Unfortunately, however, some of these products hide unwanted substances. To find out is a new German test.

Öko-Test magazine reviewed and compared 21 multipurpose creams especially recommended for dry skin on the face and body. These include various products known and also used in our country, including Nivea, Neutrogena, Dove, Glisolide creams and those of natural cosmetics with the Lavera, Sante and Weleda brands.

As always, there are also cheaper purchases, such as the Cien cream sold by Lidl.

The results

Several products come out well from the test, they are in fact 13 creams considered "very good". Once again, the analysis shows that we don't always have to spend more in order to have a quality and “clean” product. In fact, among the best there are also cheap brands.

However, there is no shortage of creams that have been penalized and "rejected" by the test. How come? Some have inside them traces of mineral oils (below the legal limits). More specifically, the lab found aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH), a group of substances including some that can cause cancer or damage genetic makeup.

German experts also explain why they are found in creams:

It is clear where MOAHs come from: from paraffins, which are at the top of the ingredient list for all contaminated products. It is the leftover oil from which these fats were originally produced.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment considers that i MOAH absorbed through the skin are not a problem, according to current scientific knowledge. But the German magazine is convinced that not all issues have been adequately clarified and for this reason it is worrying that many of the best known and purchased products are still made on the basis of these fatty substances.

Fortunately, most creams prove that formulating products without using paraffins is possible. There are in fact excellent natural alternatives such as sunflower oil or shea butter that integrate perfectly into the balance of the skin, as opposed to paraffins or silicones that remain on the surface.

In addition to fatty pollutants, the magazine reports the presence of other problematic ingredients:

  • PEG compounds, which can make the skin more permeable to foreign substances
  • Synthetic polymers, plastic compounds that can enter the environment through sewage sludge
  • Fragrances which can trigger allergies
