A large waste-eating wheel
Actually the real name is "Inner Harbor Water Wheel". Its appearance is that of a big wheel that travels on the water, which attracts many glances without being unpleasant, also because it resembles a giant snail complete with eyes. During this perennial journey, powered by electricity, Mr. Trash Wheel catches the rubbish and debris and goes to deposit them in a bin. Then this waste is sent to an incinerator, which generates power for homes in Maryland.
When the current is not strong enough to make the big wheel move it provides a solar panel, which provides additional energy.
But where does the waste come from?
First of all, the waste that Mr. Trash Wheel collects are those that are thrown on the ground and not in the appropriate containers. When it rains this garbage pours into the manholes and flows unfiltered into the sewer system, to the harbor and Chesapeake Bay. Jonas Falls begins as a creek, then is fed by other tributaries until it becomes a real river in Baltimore. Much of it is hidden from the Jones Falls Expressway, but we can say that today the Jones Falls Watershed it is much bigger than a river. This whole area is where the waste that Mr. Trash Wheel tries to get rid of comes from.
Unfortunately, there are also thousands of kg of waste collected since 2014 8,9 million cigarette butts, about half a million polystyrene containers, over 370 plastic bottles and over 257 shopping bags.

Soon a second wheel will travel in Baltimore waters
It seems that a wheel, however efficient, is not enough to clean the waterways of human incivility, which is why we are already thinking of a second wheel.
