Three Marsican bears drowned at the border of the protected area of the Abruzzo and Molise National Park, in a tank for collecting water because they were unable to go up. It is a mother with her two puppies.

They were recovered in the locality of "the dimples" between the municipalities of Balsorano and Villavallelonga, in the external protection area of the park when it was too late. Mother bear of about 10 years and her two cubs, a boy and a girl, went too far, perhaps to drink, and fell into the tub.

The report was made by a hiker who alerted the park, then for the rescue of the bears it was necessary to use a helicopter made available by the forest police, since the high altitude location can only be reached on foot.

The carcasses were transported to Pescasseroli and are in these hours subjected to necropsy to ascertain or exclude that there are no other causes of death. The surveillance service, in conjunction with the Avezzano prosecutor's office, has adopted all the judicial police acts in relation to the death of the bears.

Bears: two died in 2010

But in that same tank, two bears had already died in 2010. The area in which it is located is private property. In 2012, safety interventions were carried out by the owners with the support of the State Forestry Corps, but evidently they are no longer adequate to guarantee the safety of people and animals.

"On the recommendation of the Salviamo L'Orso Association, the Park surveillance service checked the situation and the Authority, even though it is a private property outside the boundaries of the Park, in recent weeks has ordered the owners to take appropriate measures protection, also providing technical advice for an effective and definitive solution to the problem. Unfortunately, to date, no intervention has been carried out ”, explains the Park.

A great loss

“We are facing a very serious loss for the small population of Marsican bears - declares the President of the Park in a note - which risks nullifying the many efforts made every day to reduce mortality and to have a higher number of reproductive females. The episode re-proposes the need for more significant interventions to guarantee the conservation of the Marsican bear, especially outside the territory of the Park, where the authority and function of the Authority are less incisive and effective by law ”.

Whose Responsibilities Are They?

If he asks Stefano Orlandini by Salviamo L'Orso in una luna press note:

"How will the owners of the fund who earn income from its rent but do not spend a few hundred euros to prevent people from risking their lives can justify their behavior? the control of the mountain forest area? How many times in a year do the Forestry Carabinieri carry out an inspection on the Serralunga? ".

And goes on:

“But is Serralunga perhaps far west, a territory not subject to the law? Didn't the Municipality of Villavallelonga also have the obligation to request the safety of the basin or, alternatively, its dismantling? The Park Authority sends its technicians and park rangers to monitor that area regularly so once having detected the danger posed by the tank, should he have taken immediate action, only to then denounce the owners and retaliate against them or is this asking too much of those who have the burden and the honor of working for the conservation of the rarest bear in the world? ".

Finally, the bitter observation:

"Our anger is great because absolutely unjustifiable losses like these, caused by laziness and unforgivable inefficiencies, nullify the commitment and hard work of so many respectable people."
