The Food and Drug Administration raises the alarm that the dog foods produced by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc would be connected to a massive poisoning that has affected hundreds of animals - some of which have died.

At the beginning of January, 70 cases of dogs died from industrial food. Now the alarm extends, the numbers increase. In a press release, the American nutrition agency linked the deaths of 130 dogs (and diseases found in 220 other animals) with a Midwestern dog food company.

In particular, in the samples of the brand Sportmix analyzed by experts, they revealed high levels of aflatoxin, produced by a mold that can grow on corn or other cereals used to produce animal food: high levels of this toxin can cause disease or death in animals. Symptoms of aaflatoxin intoxication in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite.

FDA is doing what it can to make pet owners have confidence in the food they buy for them - they explain by the Agency. - We issued a warning letter because inspections made on plant raw materials used by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. revealed evidence of a health policy violation. We will strive to maintain product quality and protect animal health as part of our public health mission.

Already last January, the manufacturing company had spontaneously withdrawn from the market the products of the Sportmix line, together with all the products containing corn made in the Chickash plant. In March, other product lines were withdrawn (made in Illinois) after certifying the presence of the salmonella bacterium. FDA checks continued by analyzing products also from other factories, from which several violations emerged.

Finally, on August 9, the FDA first linked the death of 130 dogs to the consumption of products made by the company: however, not all cases have been confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning through laboratory tests or veterinary checks.
