The original pink tower of Montessori method it is made up of 10 wooden cubes of different sizes, suitable for stacking one on top of the other from the largest to the smallest. The largest cube measures 10 cm on each side while the smaller cube has sides of only one cm in length.

How to build the pink tower of the Montessori Method

We can decide to buy the pink Montessori tower or, if we are skilled with DIY, we can try to build it. The advice is to make the cubes of the Montessori pink tower from a base of plywood or sturdy cardboard. Then you can paint the cubes pink or cover them with colored paper or white paper to color.

From plywood or cardboard you will have to cut out the faces of each cube. Start with the largest cube, which has a 10 cm side of the square base, and make it 10 cubes in total, reducing the size by one centimeter at a time, until you get to the smallest cube, with the side of only 1 cm.

You can also decide not to color the Montessori tower pink. In fact, among the original Montessori materials there was simply one wood-colored tower. The choice is yours, therefore, to color the tower pink or not.

Montessori method, what it is for and how to use the pink tower

The pink Montessori tower serves to help the child to develop hand-eye coordination, to recognize the shapes and sizes of objects, to learn to arrange objects in balance, to educate the eyes and to use the words 'large' and 'small' to indicate objects and to distinguish them.

The use of the pink Montessori tower is suitable for children from 3 years of age. The little ones must already be able to walk and move easily to stack the cubes without problems and without getting hurt in case they fall.

To make the child understand how to use the cubes of the pink tower, you can place the already assembled tower in a corner of the house or classroom. So the children will be able to understand how the tower is composed and how to reproduce it by themselves when they have the cubes scattered on the floor.

The children will understand that the cubes can remain in equilibrium to build the whole tower only if they are arranged one on top of the other in the correct order from base to top.

What to do once the tower is completed? At this point the child will be able to dismantle it piece by piece in an orderly way or decide to destroy it throwing it to the ground. Maria Montessori had foreseen that destroying the tower could bring a lot of joy to the children and he believed that it was a really suitable activity for a three-year-old.

We believe that parents should support the child's behavior from this point of view. Does the child prefer to destroy the tower by scattering the cubes on the ground? In this case you will have an extra motivation to make a really sturdy pink Montessori tower, otherwise if your Montessori tower is rather light it would be better for the child to undo it by removing one cube at a time starting from the top.

Is useful show the child how to build the tower from the largest to the smallest cube starting from the pieces scattered on the ground or on the carpet and then point to them how to undo the tower. When the child understands how to use the pink tower in the right way, he will be able to continue on his own game. It may take children some time to distinguish the larger cubes from the smaller ones and learn how to stack them but at some point, thanks to practice, they will be able to do it all by themselves.
