Il jar of calm, also known as the calm bottle or calming jar, is a tool inspired by the Montessori method which is used to bring babies back into balance after a crying or quarrel.

This special jar helps i children to find calm and predispose them to listen to what the parent or teacher has to say. The jar of calm is useful on those occasions when the child feels a little stressed or upset and needs to have a few minutes to calm down.

The jar of calm contains colored glitter. Just shake it to create a little magic. The child is attracted to the jar for a few minutes and stops to observe the glitter slowly falling to the bottom. It is an easy way to bring the child's attention back to the present moment.

It may be helpful to teach children a take a few deep breaths as they look at the jar of calm. Try to be close to them and reassure them in this moment. Once calm is restored, the child will be ready to better explain the real reason for his sadness or his anger. Using the jar of calm can also be helpful in helping children to make peace.

There are many variations for the preparation of the jar of calm: we have chosen the simpler version.

To build the jar of calm inspired by the Montessori method you will need them:

    - 1 glass jar with lid
    - 1-2 tablespoons of glitter glue
    - 3-4 teaspoons of glitter
    - 1 drop of food coloring
    - Hot water

The amount of water to be used varies according to the capacity of the jar. Keep in mind that you will have to fill the jar leaving a space at the top to allow you to shake its contents. If you use a plastic jar, be careful that the water is not hot enough to deform it.

Glitter and glitter glue are easily found in stationery and home improvement stores, while food dyes are on sale in supermarkets.

Pour the hot water and glitter glue into the jar. Mix very patiently so that the glitter disperse in the water. Add the glitter and mix again. Also add a drop of food coloring. Screw the lid onto the jar very tightly.

If you want you can use the hot glue to fix it better. If you want an even more colorful effect, you can add a little more glitter and food coloring before closing the jar. You can also mix the water and glitter in a separate bowl before pouring it into the jar if that's convenient for you.

Keep in mind that among the colors that best inspire calm we find blue andblue. You can choose food dyes and glitter in just this color to make your jar of calm. Other instructions suggest adding a teaspoon of transparent shampoo to make the glitter go down more slowly.
