Dejan and his mother Svetlana founded a dog shelter in 1997 in Serbia. More than 1000 animals have been saved since then
When he was still a boy, Dejan rescued the first stray dog of his life, encouraged by his mother Svetlana. It was 1997, but within a few weeks the four-legged friends brought to safety became more and more until the two, who live in Serbia, made the decision to inaugurate a shelter for stray dogs. This is how they founded the Vucjak Shelter, which has since welcomed over 1000 dogs. Mom and son started with very few resources in the village of Čumić, in the municipality of Aerodrom.

Soon the inhabitants of the area began to appreciate their commitment and over the years they have become very well known and loved in the village, so much so that several residents have chosen to support them financially with donations.

Unfortunately, however, Svetlana passed away a few years ago, but her son is continuing to carry out that mission, which was born almost by chance.
My mother had a strong personality, a strong character - Dejan says - She sacrificed everything of her life and went to the village to live with the dogs. My mom and I were best friends. I still talk to her and tell her about all the problems and challenges I face every day. I mean I will fight for animals to the death. It is my way to heaven and it is the legacy left by my mother.

As you can imagine, managing the shelter that houses hundreds of animals is not always easy for Dejan, especially since he was left alone. The expenses are many and man is not limited only to taking care of dogs, but also of abandoned cats, foxes and even wolves. For the latter, symbolic animals of Serbia (but threatened with extinction) in 2014 he founded another refuge in the mountainous area of Gledić Mountains.
Now his next project is to be able to build new winter shelters with more dog kennels to provide a safe and warm place in the colder months. To do this, Dejan trusts in the donations of the villagers and all those who believe in his project, which he hopes will continue for many years to come.
