Mobile shelters to keep stray cats warm… from disused tires

An Egyptian designer created mobile shelters for stray cats using old, disused tires.

Created by an eco-design studio, the mobile shelters are built from disused tires.

Finally even the stray cats of Cairo have a warm and 100% sustainable place to sleep this winter: the designer Ibrahim Abugendy has reused old tires to build kennels for homeless cats.

His project was born as a response to climate change, which has affected the country. In fact, temperatures in Egypt have dropped in recent years, putting the health of those who do not have a home and find themselves forced to live on the street at risk:

Cats live in difficult conditions. Due to global warming, snow has also fallen in some Egyptian cities. We have thus created a home to protect stray cats.

Abugendy is also the founder of Mobikya's studio, an eco-friendly interior design studio and a company that recycles old tires into furniture, turning them into tables, chairs and even beds.

The kennels can accommodate up to five cats each and are made from both car tires and other waste. They are designed to adapt to urban environments and are thermally insulated; moreover, they can be placed anywhere, because they are mobile.

The project, born in collaboration with the Petman company, can be financed: those who wish can order these small nests even from abroad or make a donation for stray cats.
