This refrigerator was made with a special type of clay from Gujarat, the region of India where Prajapati has its own laboratory. The clay it is cooled with water through a very simple system. On hot days the water evaporates but allows the clay and the contents of the refrigerator to remain fresh.

The refrigerator is kept at a lower temperature of 8 degrees centigrade compared to the external environment. "This refrigerator is not dangerous to health and is completely eco-friendly", Prajapati explained. Also, it's pretty cheap, given that it costs about 50 dollars.

Its realization takes about 10 days and is done in an artisanal way. This refrigerator is quite heavy. In fact, it takes the help of two people to transport it out of the laboratory. Prajabati started designing the Mitti Cool refrigerator in 2001. Now sells about 230 units per month in India, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates.

Keeping food fresh and storing it as best it can is is one of the biggest challenges facing populations that have no access to the electricity grid. It would be the 20% of the world's inhabitants. In India alone, access to electricity is impossible for at least 400 million people. Together with other similar projects, will Mitti Cool be able to solve the problem? And to us, who have all the comforts, it could be useful for the energy saving?
