It seemed like a day of fishing like any other for Thai fisherman Narong Phetcharaj, but when he saw a huge gray mass floating on the water he immediately realized that this was his lucky day. The one spotted a few meters from his boat was whale vomit, now hardened. A find that might seem disgusting, but not for those who know what a "find" like that is worth. Not surprisingly, this material, whose scientific name is ambergris, it is also known as "floating gold" because it is actually worth a real fortune. It can be sold on the market up to 30 thousand euros per kilo.
Thus, the man did not miss the wonderful opportunity to retrieve it and bring it to the mainland. To be sure that it was really ambergris, the fisherman decided to contact the experts of the Prince of Songkla University, who confirmed his suspicion. The found whale vomit, weighing about 30 kilos, could be worth more than a million euros.
None of the villagers have ever seen or touched a real whale ambergris before and everyone was happy - commented the fisherman - I intend to sell it because I have already received a certificate to prove it is real and if I can get a good price , I will retire from my job as a fisherman and organize a party for everyone.
What is ambergris and why is it so valuable
Ambergris is a substance produced by the intestines of whales. It is nothing more than a mass of undigested material combined with the substance of a waxy consistency, secreted by the organism of these cetaceans to protect the internal surface from irritation caused by the passage of indigestible material. Ambergris grows like a huge balloon in the stomach of whales and is occasionally regurgitated and carried ashore by currents.
But why is it considered such a valuable material? Whale vomit is able to fix and intensify fragrances, which is why it is used in the perfume industry.
