Mini-sculptures in old toilet paper rolls

What to do with the cardboard cylinders that we find in our hands when we run out of toilet paper? The first good rule is of course to allocate them to the trash that each of us will certainly have dedicated to the separate collection of paper. As we well know, however, often from the most trivial everyday waste can arise creative ideas that are nothing short of astounding. An example of this are the works created by Anastassia Elias, starting from the toilet paper rolls.

What to do with the cardboard cylinders that we find in our hands when we run out of toilet paper? The first good rule is of course to allocate them to the trash that each of us will certainly have dedicated to the separate collection of paper. As we well know, however, often from the most banal daily waste can arise creative ideas nothing short of astounding. An example of this are the works created by Anastassia Elias, starting from the toilet paper rolls.

Anastassia is an artist, painter and illustrator of French origins who is dedicated to painting and collage. Her work often begins with the desire to give new life to recycled materials. Her paintings, collages and decoupage works have been the subject of numerous exhibitions held in both Paris and Hong Kong. Inside the toilet paper rolls she is able to create delicious fairy-tale-like skits, inspired by nature and the atmosphere of Nordic fairy tales.

The artist cuts in the recycled paper and from the cardboard silhouettes of trees, flowers, plants, swings, children, animals and other objects and characters. The color of the chosen paper is intentionally identical to that of the roll used, in order to create theillusion that the silhouettes were born directly from it. If observed against the light, the protagonists of the skits created by Anastassia seem almost able to come to life.

Thanks to Anastassia the toilet paper rolls become small artwork unexpected. However, the scrolls used by the artist do not represent a simple frame for the little protagonists of the skits created, but rather constitute the real indispensable soul of his creations, which otherwise could not exist. To create them, the artist performs a meticulous work of cutting and assembling. Each shape cut out of paper or cardboard must be studied in its dimensions and proportions, so that the final picture appears in a certain way realistic.

The artist baptized his own creations "Rouleaux". Since 2009, the year in which Anastassia, observing a roll of toilet paper, collected the first creative ideas, they have been populated by idyllic domestic scenes, but also from boxing matches, moments of play and glimpses of urban life. The strength of his works lies in the fact of being able to represent typical and recognizable moments, able to recall immediately memories and images already existing in the mind of the observer, who will immediately forget the unusual starting materials from which the works were born, to leave free space for dreams.
