    The research, conducted byIRCCS Neuromed of Pozzilli, in the province of Isernia, and presented at the congress of the European Society of Cardiology in Rome, showed that the queen of eating habits can be associated with a reduced risk of premature death in patients who had already suffered from cardiovascular disease.

    To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed the data contained in the Moli-sani project, an epidemiological study that monitors the health of 25 adults residing in Molise.

    OUR OFFICE - About 1.200 patients with a history of cardiovascular disease were involved in the research, chosen from about 5 thousand people a year for five years - from 2005 to 2010, which represents 10% of all Molise adults. It was first verified how many people had died (208), then the adherence of all the volunteers to the Mediterranean diet, evaluating it with a score from 0 to 9 points.

    The group with the highest scores ranging from 6 to 9 had a lower risk of premature death than those who scored lower. All-cause mortality was among people with higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet reduced by 37% compared to those who followed this eating style little or nothing.

    “It is not true that after a heart attack all is lost - says Giovanni de Gaetano, head of the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention at Irccs Neuromed, Mediterranean Neurological Institute of Pozzilli -. The enemies of the heart also fight at the table. Therefore I tell patients not to focus only on drugs, but also on lifestyle: a few more kilometers or flights of stairs on foot, TV off and 'shield' power ”.



    What you have to do, therefore, is to choose once and for all a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, fish, cereals (better if whole) and polyunsaturated fats, low in meat and dairy products, consuming little alcohol and completely eliminating cigarettes.
