Meditation: 10 minutes are enough to fight anxiety and increase concentration

10 minutes a day dedicated to meditation could be enough to counteract stress and regain concentration.

Meditate, people! It is the only remedy we have left for dealing with anxieties and frustrations. And the beauty is that 10 minutes a day dedicated to meditation may also be enough for counteract stress and find a minimum of concentration when required.

This is confirmed by a study that appeared in the journal Consciousness and cognition carried out at the University of Waterloo, in Canada, in collaboration with Harvard University in Cambridge, in the States. According to the large team of researchers, focusing one's attention on the present moment would help people who are a little more anxious to put aside their oppressing thoughts and regain calm.

Nothing new, we would like to say: for centuries it is clear that meditation "clears" the mind of superfluous thoughts and puts one with oneself, favoring concentration.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers asked 82 students suffering from anxiety attacks to do a computer-type task that required a good deal of concentration. During the test, the students received several "opportunities for distraction”, With the aim of verifying their ability to stay focused on exercise and measuring their tendency to think about other things.

Then, the authors of the study randomly assigned the volunteers to two different groups: the first had to listen to an audio story, while the second had to perform a meditation exercise, according to the mindfulness practices (pay attention to the present moment). Finally, all subjects retested.

The experiment showed that meditation favors the total clearing of the mind from repetitive and decontextualized thoughts, favoring concentration. It was in fact observed that, in the last phase of the experimentation, the participants who had practiced mindfulness were able to concentrate more on computer tests. They also tended to be less distracted by interruptions.

“The tendency of the mind to wander accounts for nearly half of all people's daily stream of consciousness
    - says Mengran Xu, who directed the study. Repetitive and decontextualized thoughts can negatively affect the ability of anxious people to learn, complete tasks undertaken, or even act safely. It would be interesting to find out what impact meditation could have if this practice were carried out by a greater number of anxious people ”.
