Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Mayonnaise is one of the most loved and also used condiments in our country. But among the many brands and variants present at the supermarket (or discount) which one should we choose if we want to aim for quality and also savings? To answer this question, the magazine Altroconsumo analyzed and compared a total of 21 samples of mayonnaise.

There are those who buy the classic mayonnaise, those who prefer the light version (in which the oil is replaced with a part of water or yogurt to make it less fat) or those who need a product that does not contain eggs. Altroconsumo in its mayonnaise test included these 3 types of mayonnaise:  classic (11 products), light (4) and egg-free (6).

For each sample, purchased at the supermarket or discount store, the quality of the ingredients and the nutritional composition were checked but all were also subjected to the tasting test by a group of 280 consumers.

More specifically, in the labels the presence of mandatory indications by law (for example the percentage of eggs) but also of the optional ones (such as the method of conservation after opening or the indication of the type of breeding of the hens) was assessed. .

As regards ingredients and nutritional values, however, these have been evaluated with particular attention to the types of additives present, natural flavors or other unnecessary additional ingredients.

The results

Obviously, from the point of view of composition, there are substantial differences between the 3 types of mayonnaise. They all have in common the main ingredient, that is the oil that most of the time is sunflower oil, only in two cases it was instead of rapeseed oil and in only one of corn.

What changes a lot within the mayonnaise variants is the percentage of fat: between 68% and 78% in the classic ones, between 52% and 72% in those without eggs up to the light ones in which the oil never exceeds 25%, thanks to the fact that a part of fat is replaced by other lighter ingredients such as yogurt or even water.

Also in regards to Calories there is a certain difference, on average a classic mayonnaise contains 675 while one without eggs 543, while the light one contains 272.

As regards the sale, then, it is the light mayonnaise that has the greatest quantity, as also discovered by another test.

Altroconsumo in summary writes that:

All products, even those that are defined as light, are nutritionally unbalanced and should be consumed in moderation.

Another important aspect is the quantity of eggs (for the mayonnaise variants that obviously contain them). The percentage of this ingredient is a useful parameter to evaluate the quality of a mayonnaise and there is also the way in which the hens are reared (which, however, is part of the optional information and therefore may or may not be found on the packaging). The test remembers that:

The hens raised "on the ground" live in large sheds, without ever being able to go outside. Those raised outdoors or with organic methods also have outdoor spaces.

In principle, however, when buying we should always read the label and also choose according to the list of ingredients (which should be as short as possible).

But now let's see the ranking of the various brands and variants of mayonnaise.

The best and worst brands of mayonnaise

The best product in the test, which in this case also corresponds to the best purchase, may surprise you. It is in fact a mayonnaise purchased at the discount but which has been awarded as it contains few and simple ingredients and has an advantageous price. This is the Kania mayonnaise sold by Lidl.

As we read on Altroconsumo:

Not only does this mayonnaise have the right ratio between oil, eggs and little else, but it is also among those that our 280 jurors liked the most.

In second place, with equal merit, we find Coop mayonnaise and Carrefour brand mayonnaise, followed by Esselunga, Biffi and classic Calvé. The first light mayonnaise in the ranking is that of Esselunga.

In the last 3 positions we find instead Heinz (exquisitely) good mayonnaise, Develey mayonnaise -60% fat e Calvé Fresh mayo goodness.
